Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The icons have too much of a Microsoft flavour. Can I change them?

A: Certainly. Each custom skin includes a separate file for the icons, usually called skinicon.bmp. You can edit this file to suit your tastes! Alternatively, check the skin download page to see if anyone has created a skin to suit your tastes!

Q: Can I design my own skin?

A: Unless you have a registered version, you cannot alter the skins that ship with URLMenu. We are planning to make some tools available for making custom skins, but in the meantime, simply send us a bitmap image of your required look and we'll turn it into a skin for all to enjoy!

Q: Can I add my favorite search engine to quick search?

A: Yes! Take a look at the mysearch.inf file in the same directory as the URLMenu.exe file. It contains instructions for adding your own engines to URLMenu 99. Please send new entries to urlmenu@elphin.com for inclusion in future releases.

Q: The popup menu fills the screen with bookmarks- what is going on?

A: When you have a lot of top level bookmarks, URLMenu breaks its menu up into columns. If you don't want to rearrange your bookmarks into something more manageable, you could use a custom skin that is more compact (for example, the BlueMeanie and SimplyRed skins use a smaller font and icons).

Q: How does URLMenu decide what browser to use?

A: The Browser tab of the properties dialog allows you to set your ‘preferred browser’. When URLMenu launches a URL, it locates a browser in the following order:

  1. a currently running instance of the preferred browser.
  2. a currently running instance of any compatible browser.
  3. start a new instance of the preferred browser.

Note that if you check the ‘system default browser’ box on the ‘web browser’ property page, the above doesn’t apply. URLMenu will simply ask Windows to launch URLs into whatever browser is configured as the default (normally MSIE!).

Q: How can I open a URL in a new window?

A: Hold down Ctrl whilst clicking the required URL. (This may not work for all browsers)

Q: If the current browser page contains frames, URLMenu launches URLs within them - why?

A: This is an unwanted side effect of the technique that URLMenu uses. You can change the way URLMenu launches URLs by having it use the system default browser (See the ‘browser’ tab of the property sheet.

Q: I 'upgraded' to Windows 98 and now the menu appears off the side of the display area

A: This happened on earlier versions of URLMenu, and no longer occurs! Download a new version now!

Q: None of the above answers have helped me - what can I do?
